Jackson County Trail Closures

Certain sections of the Jackson County ATV trails will be closed until late next week for repairs due to last night’s storm.

These sections of trail include the Oak Ridge Trail (known as trail #6) in its entirety and the Pray Connector (known as trail #9).

Travel on these sections of trail would be impossible as several culverts have washed out.

Clark County Forest ATV Trail Closures – 2009 Deer Hunting Season

October 10th – 11th: Youth Hunt: All ATV trails will remain OPEN for this years youth deer hunt – Hunters wishing to avoid ATV traffic are encouraged to hunt either in Butler, Levis, Mead, Sherwood or Washburn townships; these are non-ATV trail areas.

October 15th – 18th: Antlerless Hunt:

South of Hwy 10: Trails will remain OPEN south of highway 10 during the antlerless deer hunt; DMU #55 does not have an October Antlerless Hunt.
North of Hwy 10: All ATV trails will be CLOSED during shooting hours of the antlerless deer season; DMU #58 does have an October Antlerless Hunt.

November 21st – 29th: Gun Deer Season: All ATV trails will be CLOSED during shooting hours of the November 21 – 29 nine day gun deer season.

December Antlerless Hunt: All ATV trails will be CLOSED during shooting hours of the December 10-13 antlerless deer season.

Clark County ATV Trail Segment Closed

ATV trail from intersection #2 traveling east to Neillsville (Rouse Road) will be closed From rhe beginning of September through December 15. This will be an annual trail closure on this section of trail – trail travels through several private landowner properties. Remember it is a privilege and NOT a right to travel on these trails – please obey fall trail closure so the trail is not closed permanently!

Labor Day Weekend Ride

Join us as we head North in our neighboring county, Clark County, as we ride from Rock Dam to the Mondovi & Whitehall areas and back. We will meet at the 400 Club in Millston, trailer our ATVs up to Rock Dam and commence the ride from there.

Please plan to leave the 400 Club at 9:00a sharp to trailer up to the Rock Dam trailhead. If you prefer to meet the rest of the riders at the trailhead, please make arrangements with either Ted or Winston (contact info listed below).

Master Plan Public Meeting on May 28th

We need your support and input! If you are opposed to sections of the BRF trails being closed as part of the new Master Plan, then we need you to voice your opinion. There will be a Black River State Forest Public Meeting Open House to discuss the Draft Master Plan being reviewed by the State and the DNR.

ATV trail work in the Black River Forest

Renovation of all-terrain vehicle trails at the Black River State Forest will begin this week, the state Department of Natural Resources reports. Small segments of trail will be closed on weekdays during the project. The plan is to upgrade one wetland crossing a week with the affected section of trail ready to ride again by the weekend. The first area to be affected is the 2.2 miles of trail between State Hwy. 54 and Bartos Road. Once these six crossings have been improved, work will begin on the eight crossings to the south between 54 and the state forest border.

A Chapter 30 wetland permits was applied for as required by law.

ATV trails in the state forest are part of a 230-mile regional trail system in Jackson and Clark counties. The trails were originally designed for snowmobiles. ATV usage was first permitted in the mid 1980s. At the time there were no engineering standards for ATV trail construction.

During the past decade ATV ridership has greatly increased. The large number of riders, combined with inadequate trail engineering, has created environmental problems. Engineering the wetland crossings is a crucial step in the long-term plan to improve the trails to modern standards.

After Labor Day, phase two will begin with work on remaining crossings just south of Highway 54 followed by the six crossings between East Seventh Street and Cranberry Drive.

ATV trails are open from May 15 through October 15 and from December 15 through March 15.

Weekly trail condition reports are available at Black River State Forest. During construction updated maps showing the section of trail closed will be available at this website.

Trail Opening Dates

The trails in Clark County officially opened on May 1st however the trails in Jackson County are still closed and won’t open until May 15th. Before heading out, please check for any trail updates or closures for either Jackson or Clark Counties here.

And, remember:

Clark County Trails are open May 1 through March 15 - riders must stay on the trail and not travel off the trail to go “mudding.” If excessive damage is found the trails will be CLOSED.
Jackson County ATV Trails are open from May 15th through October 15th and December 15th through March 15th.

The Millston Knights ask that you stay on the trails or stay home! Your cooperation helps us keep our trails open.

The Millston Knights ATV Club will be meeting on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Millston Volunteer Fire Department. Tentative agenda items include upcoming ride(s), marketing activities, and fund raising events. All club members are encouraged to attend. Chequamegon-Nicolet trails closed to ATVs, horses and mountain bikes March 15th 2009

Chequamegon-Nicolet trails close to ATVs, horses, and mountain bikes March 15; Forest Service roads also closed to ATVs

Park Falls and Rhinelander, Wisc. – March 6, 2009 – Forest Supervisor Jeanne Higgins would like to remind people the annual spring closure that prohibits ATV (including motor bikes), horse, and mountain bike use on Forest trails will be in effect between March 15 and April 30, 2009. During this same time period, ATVs are prohibited from using all Forest Service jurisdiction roads.

Catherine Pinegar, Forest Recreation and Lands Officer states “ATV use during the spring thaw can cause significant damage to roads and soils. Rutting, soil erosion, and other resource damage can occur when ATVs are ridden on ground that is saturated and muddy, resulting in costly repairs. This spring closure order protects the public’s investment in roads and trails, and protects the Forest’s soil and water resources.”

ATV routes designated by towns under state law are not affected by this closure. Snowmobile trails in Taylor County that also allow ATV use will remain open until the snowmobile trails are closed.

Pinegar encourages ATV, horse, and mountain bike enthusiasts to do their part in helping to protect recreation opportunities by honoring this closure.

Designated ATV, horse, and Mountain Bike trails open for use again on May 1. Forest Service jurisdiction roads open to ATV’s can also be used beginning May 1.

Club Ride on March 7th

Looking for something to do this weekend? If so, please join us as we take one last ride for the winter. We will be riding from the 400 Club in Millston to The Mug in Hatfield and back. The ride will depart from the 400 Club at 9:30a sharp.

Food and gas is available along the way however it is recommended you bring along plenty of water, food/snacks, and gas for the trip just in case.
